Subject: Resolution Recognizing the Keystone Girls State Program being held the week of June 16, 2019

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution recognizing the Pennsylvania American Legion Auxiliary Keystone Girls State Program to be held during the week of June 16, 2019.

The Girls State Program, established in 1937, is an educational workshop for high school student leaders, such as student government officers, athletic team captains and prominent student organization officers. Ericka Dunlap, Nancy Redd, Jane Pauley, Janet Napolitano, Ann Richards and Brigadier General Michelle Johnson are a few of the well-known alumni of this nation-wide program.

The purpose of this program is to teach the young people of today constructive attitudes toward the American form of government. High school juniors are selected for this program based upon having displayed leadership qualities., high moral character and maintaining high scholastic standing. Students gain leadership skills through a variety of activities and presentations during the one-week program. Every participant is elected, selected, assigned or appointed to a leadership position throughout the week. The practical exercises and program are aimed at developing a more active intelligent interest in the duties, privileges, right and responsibilities of citizenship.

The program enables a participant to grasp the meaning of some of the responsibilities the participant will be called upon to assume upon becoming an adult by teaching the participant the part citizens must play under our system of government in running for office, voting for a candidate and having a voice and apart in shaping the policies of government.

The participants have the opportunity to practice democracy in action on a personal basis and learn that each person has a role to play within our system of government and that the government is just what the people make of it.

The program shows the resiliency of our great republic, which needs an intelligent citizenry and an honest and impartial administration that is responsive to the will of the people.

Please join me in recognizing this very special program which promotes the leadership skills of promising young women in Pennsylvania and enhances their understanding of our American form of government through practical teaching and person involvement.
