Subject: Light the Way - Requiring Visible Night Signage on Uber and Lyft

A South Carolina student, native to New Jersey, was murdered after a night out with friends. In Georgia, two women were separately attacked by the same man. A woman was raped in Louisiana after a night out with friends.

What do these horrific occurrences have in common? Each person got into a car that they mistakenly believed was their Uber or Lyft and were trapped before they even realized it or could escape. These events happened during nighttime hours when it’s hardest to see whether a vehicle is marked for ride-sharing.

We already require the signage to be readable from at least 50 feet during daylight hours. My legislation simply builds on this public safety measure by requiring the signage to also be illuminated, reflective or otherwise clearly readable and visible at night. This will provide another layer of protection and help passengers identify the vehicle as one associated with a transportation network company, especially at night.

In this age of constant distraction, anyone can mistake a car for their Uber or Lyft. If you believe like I do that we should take every step feasible to help passengers identify Ubers or Lyfts prior to ever entering, then please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
