| I write to request your co-sponsorship of my bill to formalize our tribute to members of the U. S. Armed Forces who have continued the fight for our safety and freedoms in more recent major military conflicts. Specifically, my bill establishes Veterans Days to honor our military men and women who contributed to our causes in the First Gulf War (1990-1991), the Afghanistan War (2001-Present), and the Second Gulf War (2003-2008). Collectively, in these wars, over 6,200 members of the U.S. Armed Forces were killed. Of those, 324 were from our Commonwealth. Many more were wounded. This bill amends Title 38 (Holidays and Observances) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes. The annual Veterans Day for the First Gulf War will be March 6th; the Afghanistan War, October 7; and the Second Gulf War, December 18. On each of these Veterans Days, the Governor shall issue a proclamation encouraging all public schools and educational institutions to observe and conduct exercises recognizing the contributions of all those Americans engaged in these military conflicts and to remember the sacrifices they made for us. Fighting to uphold the exceptional freedoms we enjoy as citizens of the United States of America, and this Commonwealth, has been and will remain a constant for those who choose to defend our country and put themselves, selflessly, in harms way. We must never forget these brave men and women. It is also perpetually up to the adults and leaders of our nation to educate our children on the military battles that are endured to protect our unique form of governance and the individual freedoms that come from it. Our children must realize that the Americans that fight these battles are the true heroes of our time and deserve our utmost reverence. Please join me in recognizing the members of our U.S. Armed Forces who served and continue to serve their country in these conflicts. Thank you. |
