Subject: | Permanent Absentee Voter List |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to automatically send an absentee ballot to each voter on the permanent absentee voter list. Currently, a voter on the permanent absentee voter list must continue to request an absentee ballot for each election— even if they applied for permanent absentee voter status —by filling out an application. Then, the application—with a copy of an acceptable ID—must be mailed or delivered in person to the County Election Office weeks in advance of an election. The County Election Office will mail an absentee ballot, which can then be completed and returned several days ahead of the election. This process is clearly challenging to individuals who have established a need for a permanent absentee voter status. Instead, my legislation would ensure that each voter, who validated this permanent status would be included on a permanent absentee voter list and would be sent an absentee ballot for each election without having to complete an application and the submit the copy of their identification. If a voter is deemed “inactive,” moves or passes away, he or she would be removed from the permanent early voting list and thereby no longer be sent an absentee ballot. I hope you will consider co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation—to ensure that all Pennsylvanians can exercise their right to vote. |
