MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 11, 2019 09:10 AM
From: Representative John A. Lawrence
To: All House members
Subject: COSPONSOR MEMO – Wedding Barns

Dear Colleagues –

In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation regarding the use of historic barns for weddings and other special events.

Historic barns provide a unique link to the rich and distinct history of agriculture across the Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, many of these structures have been lost over the years for a variety of reasons. Oftentimes, these barns are of limited use for modern agricultural practices, despite their significant historic value.

Some entrepreneurial farmers have thoughtfully restored historic barns into venues for wedding ceremonies, receptions, and other special events. Barn weddings have become increasingly popular in recent years. Wedding barns are not specifically addressed in the building code and operate in a legal gray area, as these former agricultural buildings are now being used for gatherings. This legislation will clarify the legal status of wedding barns that meet prescribed fire and safety standards.
I would appreciate your support of this initiative.

Introduced as HB1037
