Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 8, 2019 12:03 PM
From: Representative Ryan E. Mackenzie
To: All House members
Subject: April 26, 2019 as Pretzel Day in Pennsylvania

In the near future I will be introducing a Resolution to declare April 26, 2019 as Pretzel Day in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is the center of American pretzel production for both the hard-crispy and the soft-bread types of pretzels.

Hard Pretzels in the United States originated from Lititz Pennsylvania at Sturgis Bakery in 1850 and it became the first commercial hard pretzel bakery. In 1889, the Anderson Pretzel Factory opened in Lancaster and is now considered the world’s largest pretzel bakery producing 65 tons of hard pretzels daily. In 1935, the Reading Pretzel Machinery company introduced the first automatic hard pretzel twisting machine. In 1993, the first Pretzel museum of soft pretzels opened in Philadelphia.

Southeastern and South-Central Pennsylvania is considered the birth place of the pretzel industry in the United States due to its large German-background population and currently produces nearly 80% of the nation’s pretzels. April 26 was previously declared as Pretzel Day to acknowledge the importance of the pretzel to the state’s history and economy. Pretzel making in Pennsylvania has thrived and will continue to be a part of our identity for years to come.

Please join me in recognizing April 26, 2019 as Pretzel Day in Pennsylvania by co-sponsoring this Resolution.
