MEMORANDUM

Subject: Workers' Memorial Day in Pennsylvania

I will be introducing a resolution recognizing the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council, respecting the lives of our workers and commemorating “Workers’ Memorial Day” in Pennsylvania.

Workers' Memorial Day is observed on April 28th each year to honor those workers who have lost their lives on the job and to acknowledge the families and communities who suffer as a result of workplace deaths, illnesses and injuries. This observance provides us the opportunity to recommit ourselves to creating good jobs and safe and healthy workplaces for our fellow citizens.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were a total of 5,147 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2017, down slightly from the 5,190 fatal injuries reported in 2016. The fatal injury rate decreased to 3.5 per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers from 3.6 in 2016. In Pennsylvania in 2017, 172 of our fellow workers lost their lives which was an increase from the 163 recorded fatalities in 2016. We must continue to raise awareness about workplace safety to minimize injuries and these avoidable losses.

As we pay homage to those lost and provide support to their families, we must strive for the appropriate oversight and take every necessary step to ensure a safe, healthy and hazard free workplace. Supporting our workers as they labor to provide for their families and communities is critical to maintain safety standards and high productivity, producing a thriving Commonwealth.

I hope you will join me in honoring our workers by co-sponsoring this resolution.
