MEMORANDUM

Subject: Opioid bill - Add Narcan/Naloxone to ABC-MAP

.
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation which will add information to the ABC-MAP when Narcan/naloxone is used to combat an overdose by emergency responders or medical professionals.

As you know, Pennsylvania is facing an epidemic on prescription opioids and heroin. Emergency responders now routinely administer Narcan/naloxone to combat the effects of opioids during an overdose. The law which allows for the administration by an emergency responder or family member also requires the individual be transported to the hospital for treatment. At that time, the information with respect to the administration of the Narcan/naloxone should be added to the patient’s record on the ABC-MAP.

Future health care practitioners need to have this information on hand when they are treating the patient at a later date. Without the knowledge of a prior drug overdose, the health care practitioner could unwittingly create a situation where a recovering drug addict is given the opportunity to become addicted again. Please join me in cosponsoring this legislation.
