Subject: Celebrating Earth Week in Pennsylvania

It is important that we take a moment to gaze upon the world that unfolds before us, to awe at the majesty of the mountains, and to wonder at the beauty of the deserts. This earth is the only one we have, and if we don’t take the time to admire the extravagance of its beauty, we will never be able to fully comprehend the amount of pain and suffering that we are causing it.

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, in response to a growing environmental movement that was concerned about the continued deterioration of the natural environment, and is today celebrated by more than a billion people worldwide. The annual observation of Earth Day continues to bring together communities, organizations, and individuals from around the planet to urge support for environmental initiatives and programs.

While Earth Day remains an important day to focus on the need to protect the environment, many college campuses and environmental groups now dedicate an entire week to Earth Day activities and, thus, unofficially celebrate “Earth Week.” I believe Pennsylvania should follow the lead of these institutions and organizations in order to raise awareness of the environment and increase conservation-related educational opportunities. Therefore, I will be introducing a resolution to designate the week of April 21 through April 27, 2019, as “Earth Week” in Pennsylvania

Please join me in supporting this important resolution.
