MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 21, 2019 11:45 AM
From: Representative Frank Burns
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution - National Police Week in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has more police departments than any other state in the nation. These highly trained and skilled officers patrol our communities as members of small rural departments, large urban forces and our world-class State Police.

It is imperative that citizens know and understand the responsibilities and hazards encountered by law enforcement officers every day. And, it is equally vital that members of our law enforcement agencies recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and oppression.

President John F. Kennedy recognized the need to honor the work and sacrifices of law enforcement. In 1962, he signed a proclamation designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date fell as Police Week. As founder of the Blue Lives Matter Caucus, I echo President Kennedy’s respect for our police officers across Pennsylvania.

Therefore, please join me in honoring our law enforcement by co-sponsoring this resolution recognizing May 12-18, 2019, as “National Police Week” and May 15, 2019, as “Peace Officers Memorial Day” in Pennsylvania.
