| Subject: | Firearms Safety Training Package |
| From 2005 to 2010, almost 3,800 Americans died from accidental firearm injuries. Of those victims, 1,300 were under the age of 25. Additionally, 8% of accidental firearm deaths occur due to shots fired by children under the age of six. Owning a firearm is not only a right; it is a responsibility similar to the responsibility that drivers have to safely operate their vehicles. Just as drivers must complete training before being allowed to drive, firearm owners should be required to complete safety training so that the owner knows how to properly handle and store his or her firearm. This is a common-sense approach to firearm safety that will save lives and ensure that children never get their hands on a firearm. For this reason, I will be introducing a package of two bills to ensure that firearm owners receive proper training prior to purchasing a firearm and receiving a concealed carry permit. Please join me in supporting these important pieces of legislation that will help to protect Pennsylvania’s children and gun owners from accidental firearm injuries and death. Proposal #1 - My first bill will require that individuals complete a firearm safety training course prior to purchasing the individual’s first firearm. Proposal #2 - My second bill will require that individuals in Pennsylvania complete a firearm training course prior to receiving a concealed carry permit. |
