MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 17, 2019 08:42 AM
From: Representative Maria P. Donatucci
To: All House members
Subject: K9 Veterans and Services Day in Pennsylvania

The United States K9 Corps was created on March 13, 1942, when Secretary of War Robert Patterson signed a letter that authorized the induction of dogs into the World War II effort. Since then, the use of canines has expanded into services including police, drug enforcement, customs, border patrol, search and rescue, Secret Service, and many other capacities. These services not only include dogs and their handlers, but also trainers and other helpers. In my view, they have earned our thanks for their efforts to protect all of us.

Joseph J. White, now deceased, was instrumental in the effort to recognize our canine heroes. Because canines provide critical services to law enforcement and military handlers and have helped to save many lives, Mr. White believed that canines deserve special recognition. As such, the retired military working dog handler established an annual K9 Veterans Day on March 13, the day the Corps was created in 1942.

Please join me in recognizing the important services provided by dogs, their trainers, handlers, and others who have helped save human lives through K9-related military and law enforcement efforts.
