Subject: | Pharmacy Technicians: PA One of Only Four Unregulated States |
Surprisingly, there are no mandated training or minimum education requirements for pharmacy technicians in our state. Pennsylvania is one of only four states that does not regulate these important positions. Other states have realized regulation is needed because filling prescriptions is an exacting and demanding job, and the potential for misuse exists. Basic standards are needed to safeguard our constituents. A commonsense approach is to require pharmacy technicians to register with the State Board of Pharmacy, to have a high school diploma, to complete a board-approved training program, and to pass a criminal background check. Establishing these modest requirements will help safeguard the proper filling of prescriptions. Given the high number of prescriptions being handled by pharmacy technicians, and the precision required to fill them accurately, it is critical that these personnel be trained and meet at least minimum standards. Last session this was HB 454 and it passed the House 178-16. Please support this commonsense legislation. |
