MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 14, 2019 02:53 PM
From: Representative Anthony M. DeLuca
To: All House members
Subject: Preserving the Polling Place by Increasing the “Buffer Zone”

The path to a voting box should be clear and free from external distractions. Certainly, voters should not be harassed on their way in.

Yet, as we arrive at our polling locations on Election Day, we are sometimes confronted by aggressive campaigners passing out literature and trying to influence our vote. This is intrusive and steals away from one of our most sacred and fought-for rights.

Moreover, for some, if they are made to feel uncomfortable like this, they may never come back. We can’t let this happen.

An easy way to minimize such distractions is to increase the “buffer zone” at a polling place. This zone mandates the space that political activists, campaign staff and candidates are required to keep from voters on their way in to vote.

The new law would require them to be 35 feet away from a polling location, up from the current 10 feet.

If you consider how close 10 feet is, you’ll see why it is insufficient. A distance of 35 feet is more reasonable to preserve a peaceful walk to the voting booth.
