Subject: Condemning Tobacco Companies’ Practice of Targeted Advertising in Low-Income Communities

Tobacco use disproportionally affects people who live in low-income communities. Limited access to health care and other resources to help people quit smoking can greatly increase the risk of developing lung cancer and other deadly smoking-related illnesses. For decades, tobacco companies have used deceptive marketing practices, such as intentionally locating retailers near schools and keeping prices of cigarettes low, to target neighborhoods that are already facing inequality and injustice.

It is for these reasons and more that I am introducing a resolution condemning the practice of tobacco companies’ targeted advertising in low-income communities. We must bring awareness to the negative effects this practice has had in our local communities and the efforts taken by public health programs to improve health equity among all Pennsylvanians.

It is time to counteract the damage created by tobacco companies in these neighborhoods. Please join me in supporting this resolution.
