MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Transparency in School Personnel Actions

Just as elected officials should be held accountable and remain transparent with their finances and other benefits, so should school districts. Too often school personnel settlements and separations are agreed to only under the condition of being sealed off from the public. This should not be.

Since school personnel are paid with public dollars, taxpayers have every right to know the terms of any separation including cash, benefits or other considerations. Many times these settlement packages are quite generous.

The new law will require transparency in all school personnel separations and settlements. Specifically, no school district will be able to enter into an agreement prohibiting public disclosure of the terms of separation or settlement, unless ordered by a court. Last session this was HB 2415.

School districts need to be good stewards of public funds and making deals closed off from view generates doubt and unneeded suspicion. Please support and cosponsor so that school personnel actions will be made in the light of day and not in secret. Thank you.
