MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 9, 2019 01:57 PM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Borinqueneers Postage Stamp

Since the inception of the only all-Hispanic unit in the history of the United States Army, more than 61,000 Puerto Ricans have served as “Borinqueneers,” but their unsung heroic contributions and sacrifices have only been recently recognized with the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal on April 13, 2016.

The Borinqueneers displayed valiant and meritorious service in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. While defending the United States, these brave soldiers earned over 600 Bronze Stars, more than 250 Silver Stars, nine Distinguished Service Crosses, one Medal of Honor and more than 2,700 Purple Hearts.

Despite their important contributions, the country is largely unaware of who the “Borinqueneers” are. To change this, I am urging the Citizens’ Advisory Committee of the United State Postal Service to issue a postage stamp recognizing and honoring the heroism of the “Borinqueneers” of the 65th Infantry Regiment. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
