MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 7, 2019 01:50 PM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Diabetes Testing

About 195,000 Americans less than 20 years of age had diabetes in 2017, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While still rare in children under age 10, the incidence of Type 2 Diabetes has increased dramatically in the last decade, especially in minority populations, according to the American Diabetes Association.

Many children have no symptoms before they are diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Often, the illness is discovered when a blood or urine test taken for another reason shows diabetes. If a child is overweight and gets little or no exercise, he or she may be at risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Early detection efforts can help identify risks factors and allow children and their families to take actions to reduce or eliminate them.

For health and financial reasons, it is better to detect and treat diabetes in its early stages. Early testing is key. That is why I am calling for testing of diabetes prior to a child’s admittance to school.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this very important piece of legislation. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
