MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 21, 2018 03:22 PM
From: Representative Neal P. Goodman
To: All House members
Subject: Junior Mentored Hunting Program

The Pennsylvania Game Commission’s mentored youth hunting program for those under 12 years of age introduces young people to hunting under the one-on-one guidance of an experienced adult. It allows young people to try hunting without having to take the hunter/trapper education course, which is a barrier to many who simply want to try out the sport. This popular program is also available to adults 18 and older. At this time, however, youth between the ages of 12 and 17 do not have the same opportunity to participate.

My legislation would expand these successful programs to include youth ages 12 to 17 under a new “mentored junior hunting program.” This legislation passed the House of Representatives in prior sessions and has the backing of the Sportsmen’s Alliance and other groups. Thirty-nine other states have enacted similar programs.

Please join me in growing the sport of hunting by making it easier for youth to participate.
