Subject: | Recognizing “Spina Bifida Awareness Month” |
In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution recognizing the month of October 2018 as “Spina Bifida Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Spina bifida, a permanently disabling birth defect in which an area of the spinal column does not properly form, affects 1,500 to 2,000 babies born each year in the United States. While children born with this condition can go on to lead full and active lives, it can also cause many impairments, such as bowel and bladder disorders and partial paralysis, which negatively impact an individual’s quality of life. As the exact cause of spina bifida is unknown, it is crucial to bring attention to methods of prevention and early detection and to advocate for progress in the research and treatment of this condition. Please join us in bringing awareness to the more than 177,000 Americans living with spina bifida and recognizing the efforts made by families and researchers to find a cure. Thank you for your consideration. |
