House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 1, 2018 03:03 PM
From: Representative Dan L. Miller
To: All House members
Subject: Magisterial and Legislative District Office Safety Assessment Act

On September 19, 2018, a gunman facing charges for domestic abuse shot into a magisterial district office in Fayette County injuring four people. If not for the timely and heroic actions of local police, many more may have been injured or killed.

Unfortunately, acts of violence like this know no bounds. Whether it is a wife who has the audacity to pursue assault charges in court or a group of citizens who go to listen to their elected official speak, we need to take appropriate steps to make sure our government remains open to all.

Accordingly, I will be introducing legislation that will require a safety assessment be conducted by a law enforcement officer with a certification in physical security training from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for all magisterial district court offices and state legislative district offices in the Commonwealth within a year of the effective date of the bill. Such an assessment will then allow us to discuss what further action may be needed to make sure those seeking justice and those needing assistance with government services are safe.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
