Subject: Resolution Recognizing the First Responders of the Wilkes-Barre Area for Their Hard Work and Dedication in Response to June's Tornado

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that would recognize the hard work and dedication of the first responders, members of local law enforcement, emergency management agencies, utility workers, and township and county officials who responded to the large-scale emergency weather event that took place in the Wilkes-Barre area on June 13, 2018, as a result of a category EF2 tornado.

On the evening of June 13, 2018, a category EF2 tornado with wind speeds in excess of 130 m.p.h. struck the Mundy Street commercial district in Wilkes-Barre Township. Immediately after the tornado passed, first responders, members of local law enforcement, emergency management agencies, utility workers, and township and county officials acted quickly to secure the area and evacuate individuals. It is also due to their hard work, due diligence, expertise and rapid response that the Mundy Street commercial district was successfully restored to its normal operations in the days following the tornado.

Thankfully, there were no fatalities and only six individuals sustained injuries, partly due to the late hour at which the tornado struck. According to local officials, had the tornado occurred earlier in the day, while commuters and shoppers were still in the area, the damage and injuries sustained could have been much worse.

Please join me in recognizing the hard work and dedication of the first responders and others in the Wilkes-Barre area for their efforts in the aftermath of the tornado.
