MEMORANDUM

Subject: Recognizing the 100th Anniversary of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic

The Spanish influenza pandemic occurred between spring 1918 and spring 1919 and affected approximately 500 million people worldwide – roughly one-third of the world’s population at the time. An estimated 675,000 Americans perished during the pandemic, the majority of whom were between 15 and 44 years of age.

The first case of Spanish influenza diagnosed in Pennsylvania occurred in Philadelphia on September 18, 1918, and it took the lives of more than 12,000 people over the next six months. Our society has since avoided another influenza pandemic with the size and scope of the Spanish influenza, which emphasizes the critical role that modern public health programs have played in protecting society from outbreaks of disease. It is for this reason and more that I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Spanish influenza pandemic.

As stewards of public health, it is my hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.
