House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 14, 2018 01:37 PM
From: Representative Kate Harper
To: All House members
Subject: Civic Education Awareness Month – September 2018

The government “of the People, by the People, for the People” needs their participation. Unfortunately, as we can all recognize, many people do not understand their own governments, how they operate, or which level or branch of government handles what task.

Therefore, in the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating the month of September 2018 as “Civic Education Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Earlier this legislative session, the General Assembly passed Act 35 of 2018 to require, beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, each school entity to administer at least once to students in grades 7 through 12 an assessment of United States history, government, and civics that includes the nature, purpose, principles, and structure of United States constitutional democracy, the principles, operations, and documents of United States government and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

As the General Assembly remains committed to promoting civic education, the purpose of this resolution is to continue to bring attention to the importance of civics educated citizens. It is vital for Pennsylvania’s students to learn about what it means to be a citizen in order to effectively take ownership of their government.

Please join me in sponsoring this resolution to designate Civic Education Awareness Month.
