| Subject: | Urging President Trump to reverse his immigration policy that is tearing families apart |
| In the near future, we will introduce a resolution urging President Trump to reverse his zero tolerance family-separation immigration policy that has led to more than 2,000 children being taken from their parents along the US-Mexican border through May 31, 2018. Those numbers continue to increase by the day. One of the greatest fears of many young children is being separated from their mother and father. Since the zero tolerance immigration policy was set forth by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in April 2018, many migrant children had their worst nightmares become reality as they have been forcibly removed from their parents’ arms as they arrived in America seeking asylum. This heinous policy is deeply unethical and may cause irreparable psychological harm to these children, some of which are as young as 18 months old. Under the Trump Administration’s new policy, adults caught crossing the border are now being charged with federal crimes and their children are being sent hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of miles away from their parents to federal Health and Human Services facilities throughout the country. The living conditions of these facilities are questionable; a warehouse in Southern Texas that is currently housing 200 children is keeping them in cages made of metal fencing. The children inside are given blankets made of foil and are forced to care for each other. Using children as political leverage to gain “meaningful” immigration policy reform is an abhorrent tactic and should be ceased immediately. Please join us in cosponsoring our resolution to urge the President to immediately reverse this terrible policy. |
