MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 10, 2018 08:58 AM
From: Representative Ryan A. Bizzarro
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution: Designating September 2018 as “Light the Night Walk Month”

Approximately every 3 minutes, someone in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every 9 minutes, someone succumbs to a blood cancer. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) estimates that 1,290,773 people in our country are either living with, or are in remission from, blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

In an effort to honor both the survivors of blood cancers and those who have untimely passed, LLS has coordinated Light the Night Walks in communities throughout the country. Donations gathered from these annual events have aided LLS in providing over $1.2 billion dollars to critical research initiatives aimed at identifying treatments and potential cures for blood cancers.

To raise further awareness of blood cancers and support additional research efforts, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing September 2018 as “Light the Night Walk Month” in Pennsylvania. I ask you to join me, and the dedicated individuals participating in Light the Night Walks throughout the Commonwealth this year, in doing our part to drive out the darkness of cancer.
