MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 9, 2018 02:18 PM
From: Representative Kate Harper
To: All House members
Subject: Thomas Paine Day in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating June 8, 2018 as Thomas Paine Day in Pennsylvania. Paine is one of our country’s founding fathers and leaders of the American Revolution.

Thomas Paine immigrated to Philadelphia on November 30, 1774. His first contribution to the commonwealth came as an editor of the Pennsylvania Magazine. Thomas Paine also worked as clerk of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania during his life.

It could be argued however that his greatest contribution was the publishing of “Common Sense” on January 10, 1776, the first pamphlet to advocate American independence. In this pamphlet, Thomas Paine would outline significant ideas for the new country including: the superiority of republican government over a monarchial system, and equality of rights among all citizens. As a brilliant political philosopher of his day Thomas Paine was an early proponent of universal and equal education for male and female children, equality for women, religious freedom and he suggested an alliance of neutral countries in conflicts between nations.

I encourage you to join me and support June 8th, 2018 as Thomas Paine Day in Pennsylvania for the various contributions he made to our commonwealth and country.
