Subject: RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING & HONORING THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE IAFF

In the near future, we intend to introduce a resolution that marks the recent 100th anniversary of the International Association of Fire Fighters, which was precisely at 2:00 pm EST on February 28, 2018. 100 years ago, thirty-six delegates from the original 24 local unions came together to form the IAFF.

The IAFF was formed on February 28, 1918 to unite fire fighters—for better wages, improved safety, and greater service for their communities. At a time when fire fighters worked seven days a week, had little benefits, and safety meant putting a wet towel over your face before running into flames, the IAFF became the voice of the fire fighter, the protector of the protector.

Pittsburgh firefighters organized in 1903 under the affiliation of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) Local 11431. These fire fighters - and Pittsburgh, PA - became the very first local under IAFF, Local 1, when it was officially created in 1918.
With headquarters in Washington, DC, and Ottawa, Ontario, the IAFF proudly represents more than 310,000 full-time professional fire fighters and paramedics in more than 32,000 affiliates who are part of a coveted profession that requires extensive skill, training and dedication. IAFF members protect more than 85 percent of the population in communities throughout the United States and Canada.

This resolution the honors the men and women who helped shape the IAFF into the great union it is today, making a positive impact on fire fighters’ jobs, livelihoods, health and retirement security, and ensuring that this noble profession continues to be as safe as it can be.

Please join with us in honoring this prestigious and noble organization, its membership and its anniversary.
