| Subject: | Create "Green Alert" System for At Risk Missing Veterans |
| Please join me in co-sponsoring legislation to create a "Green Alert" system in Pennsylvania. This system, which is similar to “Amber Alert” systems, informs the public that an at-risk veteran is missing. Wisconsin is poised to be the first state to establish a “Green Alert” system. It behooves us to join Wisconsin in setting a precedent for all states and to help protect the over 800,000 veterans in Pennsylvania. The idea was first proposed by the parents of Corey Adams, an Air Force veteran who served in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War and later in Kuwait and Afghanistan, and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Corey's parents alerted police and filed a missing person report within hours of his disappearance on March 20, 3017, but because he was an adult and didn't meet certain criteria, police could not help the family until he had been missing for eight days. Unfortunately, Corey Adams’ body was later found in a pond one mile from his mother's home where he was last seen. My legislation amends Title 35 (Health and Safety) of PACS, requiring a “Green Alert” be issued the same way Amber Alerts are currently issued in Pennsylvania—appearing on electronic traffic signs or text messages. When a veteran, who has a service-related health issue, is reported missing, a Green Alert would be sent out to the public, greatly improving the chances of their safe return. When a soldier goes missing in the field, their unit sends out a search and rescue team. We should do all we can to assist, in any way possible, with the search for an at-risk veteran who has gone missing here at home. Please join me in co-sponsoring this very important legislation. |
