MEMORANDUM

Subject: Resolution Recognizing May 2018 as “Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Awareness Month

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing the month of May 2018 as “Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases that affect as many as 1.6 million Americans, including 80,000 children. These life-long conditions cause chronic inflammation and damage in the gastrointestinal tract and impair the ability of the affected organs to function properly. The most common symptoms of these two diseases are persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, weight loss and fatigue. These conditions can present significant physical and financial burdens to affected individuals and there is no cure, only medications and treatments that aim to achieve remission and improve overall quality of life.

Organizations such as the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America sponsor cutting edge research to find a cure and offer a wide range of educational programs and support services to improve the lives of children and adults affected by these diseases. By raising public awareness, we can promote these initiatives to improve treatments, find a cure and acknowledge the medical and financial impact of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution so that we may raise awareness of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and support Pennsylvanians living with these diseases.
