| Subject: | PAAC MLK JR. ASSASSINATION - 50th ANNIVERSARY MEMORIALIZATION & REMEMBRANCE |
| We plan to introduce a resolution that memorializes the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 2018. Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at Memphis’ Lorraine Motel, in Tennessee, which is now the home of the National Civil Rights Museum. Dr. King and his legacy serve as a constant reminder that we must all serve to create a more just, humane and peaceful world using Dr. King’s nonviolent philosophy and methodology. Dr. Bernice A. King, youngest daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “…it is incumbent upon us to realize that, while Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King were global, influential leaders who answered divine calls to fulfill great assignments, we, too, have assignments to complete. Together, we can, in our various roles and capacities, lovingly use our skills to build the Beloved Community and win for humanity. As my father stated, ‘Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.’ We invite you to ‘step toward the goal’ with us.” 50 years ago, on April 4, 1968, a powerful and peaceful voice for freedom was lost when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated on the balcony of his motel room. During his short life, Dr. King was a beacon for human and civil rights; a half-century later, his words and actions remain relevant, clear and more powerful than ever. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated - the country’s oldest African-American Collegiate Greek-lettered fraternity - which has continued Dr. King’s legacy and the mission of supplying a voice and vision to African-Americans, and to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. Please join with us in co-sponsoring this momentous and solemn occasion and date of remembrance. |
