Subject: Condemning the President of the United States for His Recent Disparaging Comments about Haiti and the African Continent

In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution condemning the president of the United States for his recent disparaging remarks about the country of Haiti and the countries encompassing the continent of Africa.

In an expression of disdain about the United States’ policy of accepting nationals from certain countries of origin, our nation’s commander-in-chief referred to the country of Haiti and African countries generally as “shitholes” during a recent immigration reform meeting convened at the White House. Not only were the president’s comments about Haiti and the African continent vile and objectionable, they were also completely unbecoming of an officeholder who serves as the veritable “Leader of the Free World.” In addition to denigrating the culture and heritage of millions of Haitian and African immigrants presently residing in the United States, the president’s remarks have also now placed us at odds with many African nations possessing emergent and expanding global economies.

Regrettably, this is not the first time that our president has spoken disparagingly about countries populated by mostly black and brown citizens. In fact, President Trump’s recent comments seem to highlight an unmistakable pattern of animus that he has towards the diverse cultures, experiences and hardships of immigrants. Although there are those among us who seek to excuse the president’s recent behavior on the basis that society as a whole has become too politically correct, the fact of the matter remains that the president’s comments were not in any way conducive towards improving America’s standing on the world stage or mending the racial divide that presently exists domestically. No political office is beyond reproach and we as a nation should demand more from our commander-in-chief.

Therefore, we urge our colleagues to please join us and the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus in holding our president fully accountable for his recent comments by co-sponsoring this very meaningful resolution.
