Subject: Resolution Designating February 2018 as “Black History Month” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating the month of February 2018 as “Black History Month” in Pennsylvania.

As many of you may be aware, on September 9, 1915, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) was established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson (known as the Father of Black History) for the express purpose of chronicling the history and contributions that black Americans have made to our society. His vision would later evolve into the observance of Negro History Week and then ultimately “Black History Month.”

The ASALH plays an integral role in highlighting the innumerable accomplishments and achievements of blacks by continuing to undertake the vitally important task of promoting, researching, preserving, and disseminating information about black life, history and culture to the global community. Additionally, this esteemed organization is responsible for establishing the annual theme for “Black History Month,” which this year will be “African Americans in Times of War.”

"Black History Month" is an opportunity for all Americans to commemorate the various struggles and victories of African-Americans throughout the annals of our nation’s history. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to implore my colleagues to please join me in designating the month of February 2018 as “Black History Month” in Pennsylvania.
