Subject:	Resolution Designating March 2018 as “Irish American Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania

In anticipation of the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day observance, we intend to introduce a resolution designating March 2018 as “Irish American Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania. Since the founding of this great nation, American citizens of Irish descent have been responsible for many significant contributions both within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States. These historical contributions include military service, as many soldiers of Irish descent fought under General George Washington in the Continental Army and served in every major conflict involving the United States. Those of Irish heritage continue to thrive and excel today in many spheres of human endeavor including, but not limited to, academia, business, literature, science and politics. In an effort to recognize Irish Americans and their contributions to our nation, the Commonwealth hosts some of the oldest and largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country. These include the City of Philadelphia, where the parade has taken place since 1771, and the City of Scranton, which hosts the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the nation. Regardless of your ethnicity or heritage, all Pennsylvanians are welcomed and urged to participate in the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, which is observed annually on the date of March 17th. We hope that our colleagues will join in recognizing the many contributions made by Irish Americans in this Commonwealth and beyond.
