MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 11, 2017 09:45 AM
From: Representative W. Curtis Thomas and Rep. Brian L. Ellis
To: All House members
Subject: Cybersecurity Awareness Month in PA

In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution designating October 2017 as “Cybersecurity Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth.

Pennsylvanians are constantly adopting new and innovative technologies. Unfortunately, in the Information Age, the very technologies that empower us to create and build also empower those who would disrupt and destroy.

This potential for disruption and destruction was most recently seen with the Equifax data breach, when more than 5 million Pennsylvanians were potentially affected. The data that was compromised includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, driver's license numbers and credit card numbers - all information that you wouldn't want to fall in the wrong hands.

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, observed by the US Department of Homeland Security every October since 2003, calls on individuals, families, government agencies, schools, businesses, and organizations to work together to improve their own cybersecurity and promote initiatives that ensure the confidentiality of sensitive information, the integrity of e-commerce, and the resilience of digital infrastructure.

Please join us in designating October 2017 as “Cybersecurity Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania to raise awareness of the initiatives we can all take to promote cybersecurity in the Commonwealth.
