MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 10, 2017 08:19 AM
From: Representative Kristin Hill
To: All House members
Subject: A Resolution Recognizing October 2017 as the 250th Anniversary of the Mason-Dixon Line

Very shortly, I will be introducing a resolution to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Mason-Dixon Line.

The original Mason-Dixon Line was established to settle an 80-year dispute between 2 colonies, Pennsylvania (Delaware was then part of the Pennsylvania colony) and Maryland. In October 1867, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon successfully completed the Mason Dixon Survey during which they used celestial measurements to form an accurate 233-mile-long line between Pennsylvania and Maryland, and the 83 mile-long between Maryland and Delaware. The new border was marked by large blocks of limestone, some weighing as much as 600 pounds. Today, most of the original stone markers have either deteriorated, or some say, taken as souvenirs.

However, the Mason-Dixon Line still exists. It was last resurveyed in 1902 and found to be remarkably accurate; with minor adjustments, it still serves as the Maryland-Pennsylvania border.

Please join me in co-sponsoring the 250th Anniversary of the Mason-Dixon Line Resolution. If you have any questions, please contact Lauren Evans at lmevans@pahousegop.com.
