MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 25, 2017 04:04 PM
From: Representative Thomas P. Murt and Rep. Stephen Kinsey
To: All House members
Subject: National Disability Employment Awareness Month

In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution designating October, 2017 as “National Disability Employment Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

The purpose of “National Disability Employment Awareness Month” is to heighten the awareness about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.

The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The theme for 2017 is “Inclusion Drives Innovation,” which marks 72 years since the first observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this Resolution to raise awareness about the contributions of talent workers with disabilities.
