MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 25, 2017 12:30 PM
From: Representative Russ Diamond
To: All House members
Subject: Jury Duty Exemption – Emergency Services Personnel

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will add an exemption for jury duty for emergency services personnel.

I was recently contacted by a constituent who serves as a volunteer firefighter in a relatively small company, and whose absence from that service over a period of days or weeks would have seriously compromised the ability of the company to respond to emergencies. Despite the fact that the fire chief sent a letter explaining the situation, the firefighter was not excused because his reason to request to be excused was not one of the reasons enumerated in the statute.

To me this seems a matter of common sense to protect the interests of our communities, but if legislation is required to make common sense our practice, then so be it.

I respectfully ask that you join me in cosponsoring this common sense piece of legislation.
