House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 11, 2017 10:17 AM
From: Representative Justin J. Simmons and Rep. P. Michael Sturla
To: All House members
Subject: Outdoor Dining With Pets

In the near future, we will be introducing legislation that will amend our food safety law in the Agriculture Code to authorize retail food facilities, that so choose, to permit customers to bring their pet dogs to outdoor dining areas of the facility.

With a large percentage of Pennsylvanians being dog owners, many restaurant owners wish to accommodate customers with canine companions but are currently prohibited from doing so by law. Restaurants who wish to permit dogs accompanying their owners in outdoor dining areas risk non-issuance, suspension or forfeiture to their license to operate. This legislation will provide restaurant owners with choice, provide consumers with the option, boost business revenue and still ensure that certain safety parameters are followed.

Thank you in advance for consideration of this legislation. If you have any questions, please contact our Harrisburg office at (717) 783-1673 (Simmons) OR (717) 787-3555 (Sturla).
