MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 19, 2017 02:03 PM
From: Representative John D McGinnis
To: All House members
Subject: Co-Sponsorship Memo for Expanding the Electioneering-Free Zone for Voters

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to extend the distance where electioneering is prohibited at the polls. Currently, the law reads:

All persons, except election officers, clerks, machine inspectors, overseers, watchers, persons in the course of voting, persons lawfully giving assistance to voters, and peace and police officers, when permitted by the provisions of this act, must remain at least 10 feet distant from the polling place during the process of voting.

My proposal would be to extend the distance to 100 feet where voters will feel secure and be undisturbed as they engage in their civic duty.

37 states set their distances for electioneering-free zones to at least 100 feet and a dozen states have at least a 200 foot zone. Only Pennsylvania (10 feet), New Hampshire (10 feet), Alabama (30 feet), and Virginia (40 feet) have distances of less than 50 feet.

Please join in co-sponsoring this legislative effort to make voting in Pennsylvania a more positive experience for voters. Thank you.

Introduced as HB1589
