| Subject: | Stopping for on-track equipment at railroad grade crossings |
| Within the next few days, I will be introducing legislation that would require motorists to stop at all railroad grade crossings for on-track equipment. My legislation is necessary because the maintenance of way, railroad contractors and other on-track equipment is not included in the statute that mandates a motorist’s responsibilities when approaching a crossing. On-track maintenance equipment has evolved into train-like machines that can present the same danger to motorists as a train engine or a train with cars. This type of equipment is not able to stop quickly if a vehicle is on the track. It’s also important to note that not every piece of on-track equipment will activate the crossing gates. Additionally, crossing gates are mechanical and do occasionally fail so it is imperative that we protect vehicles from all equipment that may pose a safety concern. The public is well aware that trains occupy the tracks in their respective neighborhoods but not everyone is aware of the on-track maintenance and construction machines that travel on the track infrastructure of our Commonwealth. Clarifying that there are other pieces of equipment that can threaten the safety of our motorists, and requiring our vehicles to stop for them, will increase the safety of our communities and the safety of the men and women who work on the railroads.
