MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 18, 2017 03:01 PM
From: Representative Frank Burns
To: All House members
Subject: Paul E. Sweeney Memorial Bridge

In the very near future, I will be introducing legislation to rename a bridge in my legislative district to the Paul E. Sweeney Memorial Bridge. The bridge is Over Bridge Street that crosses over Railroad Street in Lilly, PA.

Paul E. Sweeney was a World War II Veteran who held the rank of 1st Sergeant, was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Mr. Sweeney died August 9, 2016. As a U.S. Army Sergeant, Mr. Sweeney led his platoon in battle in many European countries as a combat engineer trained in mine demolition with the 90th Division.

During action in the St. Lo campaign, his unit was part of General George Patton’s Third Army but was on loan to General Omar Bradley for the D-Day invasion. It was in St. Lo where he earned the Silver Star for his actions in combat. On July 4, 1944, a German sniper threw a percussion grenade at him which earned him the Purple Heart. While recovering from his injures, the Battle of the Bulge took place. Upon being discharged in 1945, he earned the British Military Medal personally inscribed by the Kind of England.

He returned home to Lilly Pennsylvania where he settled and raised his family. He was born on September 11, 1919.

Please join me in honoring Paul E. Sweeney. Thank you.
