Subject: PTHA's "Turning for Home" Racehorse Retirement Program Resolution

Please join me as a cosponsor of a resolution which will recognize the PTHA's Turning For Home Racehorse Retirement Program. Turning for Home, Inc. has helped to safely retire over 2000 former Thoroughbred racehorses since it was established in May of 2008. Today Turning for Home is the national standard for equine repurposing programs. Any racehorse stabled at the PARX racetrack whose racing career has concluded must either be provided with a safe and secure new home, or be donated to Turning for Home (TFH). Through collaborative arrangements with veterinarians each horse is carefully evaluated and treated as needed. The horse is then transferred to one of the 15 Partner farms supported by TFH. At these carefully screened farms the horse is rehabilitated and retrained for a new career such as a therapeutic horse, hunter/ jumper, pleasure horse, polo pony, or dressage competitor. The horses are carefully prepared for adoption by new owners who have been thoroughly vetted and are capable of caring for the horse in a humane and healthful manner. Today, primarily as a result of the programs TFH has fostered throughout the country, retired thoroughbred racehorses are living long healthy productive lives off of the racetrack, bringing great joy and pleasure to their new owners, resulting in Pennsylvania leading the way in bridging the careers of ex-racehorses and sport horses and leaving a positive impact on racing and the agricultural industry.

Programs such as Turning for Home would not have been possible without the funds directed to our equine racing industry as a result of Act 71, of 2004, the Racehorse Development and Gaming Act.

Please join me in recognizing the outstanding work and success of the Turning for Home program.
