Subject: | Juror Compensation and Tax Credits (Re-Introduction) |
In the near future, I will be re-introducing legislation – former House Bill 894 of the 2015-2016 Legislative Session – to change the way that the Commonwealth compensates jurors. It is important that Pennsylvania law supports citizens in the performance of their civic duty to serve on a jury if summoned. Under current law, jurors are paid $9 a day for the first three days of service and $25 a day for each day thereafter. This payment methodology creates a financial hardship for many residents who are summoned. As such, my legislation would require employers to pay a juror’s ordinary wage or salary each day that the employee is required to report for service, and the Commonwealth will grant a tax credit to the employer for the amount expended. My bill also addresses compensation for unemployed and self-employed individuals to ensure no unnecessary hardship results from their service, and addresses parking and travel allowances for all jurors. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. Previous Co-Sponsors – Former House Bill 894 of 2015-2016 - D.
