In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to permit a career and technical center (CTC) to authorize a licensed registered nurse or licensed practical nurse to administer medication to students. Under current law, a school nurse may be assigned to multiple buildings at one time. As a result, some CTCs may employ their own school nurses or utilize the school nurse assigned to the school district in which the CTC is located, meaning that the school nurse must travel from the local school district to the CTC to provide school health services, such as administering medication to students. Providing these services can be particularly challenging in geographically dispersed school districts with school buildings at a distance from the local CTC. At the same time, many CTCs also employ licensed health care professionals to teach curricula related to various health occupations, who would be able to assist in these circumstances but are not able to under current law. My legislation will permit a CTC to authorize a licensed registered nurse or licensed practical nurse to administer medication to students under the supervision of the school nurse employed by the school district in which the CTC is located in limited circumstances. The licensed registered nurse or licensed practical nurse must be employed by the CTC to teach a course. Furthermore, the student being administered medication must be currently enrolled in an approved program at the CTC.
