Subject: Using Volunteer Fire Relief Funds for Basic Utility Expenses

In the near future, I will introduce legislation that permits volunteer fire companies to use relief funds to pay for basic utility expenses.

Pennsylvania’s volunteer fire fighters have dwindled from approximately 300,000 in the 1970’s, to around 50,000 today. In addition to a reduced number of volunteers, these brave men and women face other challenges such as the exorbitant costs of apparatus, equipment, and other training costs, forcing many departments to spend their time on fundraising events-- just to keep the lights on at their fire station.

Specifically, my legislation amends Title 35 (Health and Safety), to allow volunteer fire relief funds to be used to pay for the basic necessary utilities such as gas, electric, water and sewage. It is my hope that in doing so, Pennsylvania’s volunteer firefighters will be able to focus more on saving lives instead of worrying about planning the next fundraising event. It is so incredibly important that we, as lawmakers, do everything we can to support our volunteer firefighters.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this very important legislation.
