Subject: Designating March 2017 as “Brain Injury Awareness Month”
 
In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution designating March 2017 as “Brain Injury Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Brain injuries, whether acquired or traumatic, can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone. The Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania reports the following statistics relating to brain injuries in Pennsylvania:
  • 245,621 people are living with brain injury;

  • 2,223 die from brain injuries each year;

  • 10,463 are hospitalized each year after a brain injury;

  • 49,505 are seen in the emergency room following a brain injury each year;

  • 25,975 Pennsylvania children have brain injuries each year; and

  • 8,612 Pennsylvanians each year sustain long-term or life-long disabilities from brain injury.

As you can imagine, brain injuries greatly impact the lives of individuals who have experienced them as well as their families and loved ones. Therefore, we must encourage ongoing research in brain injuries as well as treatment and support for patients in recovery.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this important resolution and designating March 2017 as “Brain Injury Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth.
