| Subject: | Request for Co-sponsorship: Charter School Enrollment |
| In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation affecting charter school enrollment for schools slated for closure. This measure was formerly introduced as House Bill 1109 of the 2015-2016 Legislative Session. Current law permits charter schools closing due to non-renewal of charter to receive a payout based on the number of students enrolled at the time of closure. Apprehensions have been raised regarding the possibility that charter schools may continue to enroll students regardless of the impending closure, for the purpose of increasing their payout. I believe this practice must end. With this in mind, my measure will prohibit charter schools from enrolling new students once they have received notification from the local school board that their charter will not be renewed. Should an appeal be filed, enrollment may continue while the appeal is under consideration. However, if the appeal is denied by the Charter School Appeal Board, the charter school must, immediately upon notification of the denial, cease enrollment of new students.
