MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 7, 2017 01:14 PM
From: Representative Carol Hill-Evans
To: All House members
Subject: Designating March 15, 2017 as “Kick Butts Day” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating March 15, 2017 as "Kick Butts Day" in Pennsylvania.

In the United States currently, more than 16 million individuals are suffering from a disease caused by tobacco use. Smoking increases the health risks associated with many diseases, including cancer, stroke and heart disease, and is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths annually.

Despite our progress with tobacco education and cessation programs, smoking among America’s youth is still too prevalent. Every day, an estimated 3,000 children try smoking for the first time and more than 700 children become new smokers. Studies have shown that children are much more likely to be influenced by tobacco advertising than adults, with one third of underage smoking being attributed to tobacco promotion. The tobacco industry is estimated to spend $8.8 billion annually – or $24 million each day – to market their products nationwide, with much of that marketing aimed at children.

Please consider joining me by co-sponsoring this important resolution.
