Subject: | Prohibiting Public Fund Transfers to Inmates |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing legislation that will prohibit gift cards/certificates as well as electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, administered by the Department of Human Services for public assistance, to be used towards alcohol purchases and/or deposited into inmate accounts. This legislation would also prohibit the Department of Corrections from allowing public assistance withdraws or transfers from occurring on the facilities premises. It is important that public assistance is used to provide necessities, such as food and shelter to those who need them most, such as feeding hungry children. That’s why I’m prohibiting the use of these funds to inmate accounts, for purchases and amenities, and things like cigarettes. I trust that you will agree that this issue must be addressed and my bill will render your support, by adding your name as a cosponsor to this legislation. Thank you. This is a reintroduction of former HB 1550. Previous co-sponsors include; BARRAR, BENNINGHOFF, BURNS, D. COSTA, FARRY, GABLER, GILLEN, IRVIN, MILLARD, MILNE, MURT, RAPP, SANKEY, SAYLOR, STEPHENS, TRUITT, WARD and ZIMMERMAN. CD:mf:cmc |
